TV historian rescues stranded travellers

The historian and broadcaster, Dan Snow has returned to Dover from Calais, with about 25 stranded travellers he rescued using three motorboats.

His rescue mission used rigid inflatable boats, known as ‘ribs’.

He has crossed the Channel to help those affected by flight restrictions, but he said the French police had ordered him not to return.

Stranded in Europe? Can get to Calais?

edit (8.00pm, 17th April): Dan’s Calais Rescue fleet’s also mentioned on this Italian news site:

Oltre a suppliche per un passaggio, fra i tweet degli amanti del design in fuga si trovano anche casi di inaspettata generosità: preoccupato per la sorte dei suoi compatrioti, Dan Snow, giovane scrittore e presentatore della Bbc, ha aperto l’account calaisrescue. Domenica, promette, sarà a Calais con una miniflotta di cinque barche e fino al tramonto farà la spola sulla Manica con il porto di Dover. Ma come raggiungere il porto francese sulla Manica resta un problema aperto.

Roughly translated with the aid of NiceTranslator:

In addition to pleas for a passage between the tweets of design lovers on the run, are also cases of unexpected generosity: concerned about the fate of his compatriots, Dan Snow, a young writer and presenter of the BBC, has opened the account calaisrescue. On Sunday, he promises, a mini fleet of five boats will be at Calais and there will be an evening commute across the Channel to the port of Dover. But how to reach the French port on the Channel remains an open question.

An Audience with…

Friday, April 16th, 2010

If I’ve used my google-fu and basic deduction skills correctly, Dan will be appearing at this year’s Chestival during their series of “An Audience With…” talks.

The details from the Clive Conway Celebrity Productions site are as follows:

An Audience With Dan Snow

The historian, author and broadcaster, Dan Snow will be giving a talk about the history of the Royal Navy, to accompany the series currently going out on BBC2. Essentially it will explain why Britain became the world’s most powerful navy and the impact that had on Britain and the world

Dan also talks on his recently published book on the fall of Quebec in 1759, one of the decisive moments of British imperial history.

Dan Snow calls on Friends of the Forces to step forward

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

From the Royal British Legion site:

TV presenter Dan Snow, the rising star of BBC history specials and The One Show, has joined Prince Harry in backing The Royal British Legion’s Friends of the Forces Awards.

Dan, who has reported from historic British battlefields across the globe, knows better than most, the special relationship between the UK and its Armed Forces.

“The British Armed Forces have shaped our country’s history and have always enjoyed the nation’s support,” he said, shortly after filming his recent series, The Empire of the Seas. “Now’s the time to recognise those who make an exceptional effort to respect and support our Armed Forces.”

Dan will be presenting the Friends of the Forces national awards ceremony in July and urged people to come forward with nominations.

My Perfect Weekend: Dan Snow

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

From the Telegraph:

A Highland fling gets my heart racing but I love London, says Dan Snow.

Dan Snow loves cruising over southern England in his friend's Tiger Moth

If money was no object I’d happily blast off into sub orbital space on Richard Branson’s craft but I don’t see that happening any time soon. Still, I’m a great believer that you can achieve an extraordinary amount in a weekend and often find myself at Euston station on a Friday evening boarding the sleeper train to Scotland.

Dan Snow on his ideal dinner party

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

From the Times:

No jackets, and no labour-intensive cooking, just lots of wine, a simple lasagne main and a bit of Outkast on the iPod

In my last flat in Earl’s Court we had a roof terrace, and we had loads of summer dinner parties. It’s mega relaxed. You won’t see anyone wearing a shirt or jacket, we just kick back.

I like entertaining, but I wouldn’t call it haute cuisine. I’ve developed strategies so that my friends and I can concentrate on having a good time, such as cold starters and making things that I can just get out of the oven.

I’m a bit chaotic, so it would normally be organised a few hours before everyone shows up. I’ve got no beef with supermarkets, so I’ll get most things there, but I do like to get my meat in a nice butcher’s. My dining room is also my study, which means it’s filled with loads of books. Getting the house ready isn’t really my strong point but I’ll get the lights nice and low.

Canada: Dan Snow finds Quebec full of British history and Gallic charm

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

From the Mail online:
I arrived in Quebec on the trail of a famous British victory. Just over 250 years ago on a plain above the city, a British army in the heart of enemy territory, and wholly outnumbered, fought a battle which would change the world.

The Battle of Quebec was a triumph for British General James Wolfe, who died from musket wounds at the glorious moment of victory.
